Lime & Cilantro Popcorn (inspired by Brooklyn Winery)1/4 cup popcorn kernels Oil (I used Canola, but Peanut Oil is typically used. If you have a popcorn popper, use that!)1 lime, zestCilantro, choppedSalt1 jalapeño, seeds removed, chopped (optional)Cover the bottom of a sauce pan with oil and heat covered over medium heat until hot. Add popcorn and salt. Swirl the pan in a circular motion. Popcorn will begin to pop – move the lid so there’s a crack for steam to escape. Once popcorn has stopped popping, remove from heat and pour into large bowl or paper bag. Sprinkle with salt. Using a microplane, add lime zest to the popcorn. Toss gently, add cilantro and jalapeño.
Brooke’s mom was in town a few weeks ago and I met them and Mads at the lovely Brooklyn Winery for some wine, food and conversation. I tried their popcorn snack and was so in love with it that I resolved to try to make it at home. Popcorn was big in my household growing up (giant yellow plastic bowl, unhealthy amount of butter, parmesan cheese) so I was happy try a new take on my favorite snack.
As I mentioned, the last two weeks have been a bit chaotic – somewhat planned, somewhat not. BYOB was a week ago – It was great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and I’m incredibly grateful for my friends who came out and helped me make it happen. I neglected to do a headcount, but we had a steady stream of people all day and were able to donate 8+ boxes of books, as well as raising $189 (which was matched by an anonymous donor) for Housingworks. I walked away with a copy of Leaves of Grass and the comfort of knowing that there’s a book called “Slendercize” out there in the world.
